Before we left Cairns we decided to drive up North and explore that area. We had one day left so we headed for Port Douglas first. Port Douglas is just over an hour North of Cairns and is a nice little town on the coast. Unfortunately it was way out of our price range on this trip but it was good to spend a while looking about the centre before heading through to the marina. After this we took a walk along the 4 mile beach and went croc hunting as there is apparently a section of the beach that they inhabit. We never came across any so we decided to sit and soak up the sun before having another walk about and seen the spot where Steve Irwin died. (Not sure how true this is)
After Port Douglas we headed a little further North to a place called Mossman Gorge. This land is still owned by Aboriginal people and access was limited so we couldn't walk about freely where we were. We had also just missed the last tour of the area that day so we had a look about the small museum/art gallery. This was interesting as it had a good selection of Aboriginal paintings as well as old artefacts that had been discovered in the area in excavations.
It was then time to move on and the next stop was Wonga Beach. Again this was a nice beach a little further North. This beach was so quiet and peaceful it was unbelievable. We had a little walk about before having a go on a rubbish tree swing and setting about trying to crack open some fruit we assumed to be coconuts. After about 10 minutes of smashing it against trees and rocks we finally got a crack in it and we managed to prise it open. However it was all soggy and was infested with maggots and we quickly threw it away! We did have some pics of this but they have vanished.
The furthest North we ventured was up to see the Daintree river. This river is inhabited by loads of crocodiles so we thought that we would go and see if we could see any. We drove up as far as the Daintree Village which has to be one of the smallest villages we have ever been in as it had about 3 streets as far as we could see. There was no good vantage points here so we travelled around and had a look in at various other parts of the river but we never seen any. After this it was dark and it was nearly time to start heading South in our campervan.
